A Christian Daycare for James Island
Hours and Ages for Daycare
Open Monday through Friday from 6:30am to 6pm, accepting children from six weeks to three years old. Located at 1872B Camp Road on the property of Saint James Church in the building behind the Parish Hall.
The Cost
As of September 1st the weekly fees are $165.00 for Infants thru 1 year and $160.00 for 2 year olds. There is a $75 registration fee at time of enrollment that is renewable every school year in September. At this time there is not a part-time offering.
The Mission
This mission of Saint James Day School is to provide a loving and secure Christian environment where children can develop socially, emotionally, physically, intellectually, and spiritually in a program run by a dedicated, professional staff.
The Vision
Saint James Church has had the vision of reaching out to young families and children for several years. Many faithful members have been praying for such a ministry to be raised up and a financial gift from Frances Frampton in 2005 was set aside for the purpose of allowing this vision to begin.
In the summer 2006 local directors of Daycares were interviewed and information was gathered. DSS was contacted about licensing. The vision was cast by the senior pastor, Arthur Jenkins, and was affirmed by the Vestry who prayerfully made the decision to go forth with the Saint James Day School. It would not be a four hour, non-licensed, church daycare, but a full time, DSS approved, Day School. We chose the latter to bless working families who need a full day for their children.
The History
In March of 2007 preparations began for a full time, DSS licensed, Day School, that would provide a safe, Christian environment for young families with daycare needs in our area. Our preparation has been covered with prayers and challenged by the directives of government agencies. It has been a process that has convinced us that the battle of meeting all the criteria of licensing agencies is worth the cost to reach out to the families. On February 8, 2008 DSS approved us for opening. On March 3, 2008, we were able to open the doors for our first families and officially begin the Saint James Day School.
Director
Crystal Strickland takes over the reigns of Director from Mary Ellen Doran. Mary Ellen will return her attention to her position as Christian Education Director at Saint James Church and will now serve on the Day School Board. Crystal has heart for caring for children and a wealth of experience in daycare. She comes to Saint James after serving as assistant director 14 years at Harbor Lake Academy and Daycare in Goose Creek, SC. One of her encouragements for parents is, "Don't worry that children never listen to you. Worry that they are always watching you." She and her husband, Glenn, have three children , Jonathan 24, Jessica 22, and Megan 16.
Assistant Director
Ellen Leighton is the assistant director of the school. She has been a member of Saint James church for over 20 years where she has been on staff part time in administration. Her husband, the late Greg A. Leighton, and she have two children. Katherine 15 years old and John, 23, a recent graduate of the College of Charleston. Ellen has been involved in home schooling and has a B. S. Degree in Elementary Education from the College of Charleston.
The Day School Board
Five members of Saint James church oversee the Day School. It is responsible to establish policies, oversee the budget, and to support the staff. The Board is currently comprised of professionals committed to the ministry of the Day School. It includes two educators, a daycare owner, a doctor, and a retired South Carolina state employee. The current chair of the Board, is Marie "Scooter" Barnette.
